I first wanted to read this book simply because I found the cover
and title intriguing. Naturally it is not my genre of choice. My
taste dabbles in Teen Fantasy and Romance. Mostly Angels and Demons
but something about this book told me to choose it. Flipping through
the pages I was astonished to see it was about thirty six chapters
long but after a few minutes you've come to realize they are not very
long.
When I first started reading this book I was amazed by it power
and emotion. Spencer Shane is a high school senior who feels
meaningless in life and incapacitated to change his circumstances. He
lives in a highly dysfunctional family with a verbally, emotionally
and physically abusive mother. To top it off he is also being
bullied at school. Spencer feels he is unaccompanied in the world
with no one he can turn to for help and a sense of safety and love.
His pain, and his greatest fear is of turning into his much-hated
father. Spencer realizes he needs to take action to turn his life
around, but he is looking for a quick fix with direct results, no
matter the outcomes. Although Spencer create a lot of his own
disaster, his cognition to acquire to take control and obligation for
his actions is huge. Its a lesson very few learn in life. Choices
have consequences and some of them last a lifetime.
