Book Review: The Secrets of Blood and Bone by Rebecca Alexander

The Secrets of Blood and Bone by Rebecca Alexander

Rating: 2.5/5 Stars

This book was in my genre of choice which is YA Fantasy. However I haven't read the first book in this series yet, but that is ok as this second book is fine as a stand alone. I did want to go back and read the first one of course to understand some parts. I was slightly confused at times about what was going on in the book.

To be honest, this book was all over the place, and slow moving. I am still confused about things by the end of novel, and not because of the way it ended in a cliffhanger. This book jumps between the past and the future in the life of the main character Jack. I did not like the constant back in time thing that was going on. The every other chapter being in the past thing got old quick and I honestly liked it better when I skipped over those chapters because I only really cared about the present times anyway.

This book is good for someone interested in the Vampire-esq type of stories. I would recommended also for others who enjoy books with Victorian aspects.

Story Excerpt: ReBirth Chapter 5

Her hair was unruly long and bunched out in large bush of curls and she grew about two feet. Seven years passed and at the tender age of eleven she was grown into a smart young woman. Abraham insisted that she tamed her wild hair that it made her stand out in the crowd. Smirking at him and rolled her eyes, she scanned the area. Men and Women dressed in dark colors of grey, black, blues, they all seemed the same. Unfortunately he purchased her a dress that was crushed velvet blue with one inch heels.

“Fix that mop of hair before we visit the lovely government.” He cooed and she giggled at him. It had always been the plan, ever since the war started the uproar to overthrow. Passing the gardens of the Government’s mansion she glared at it. Mimicking what was once the White House was a large black home with lush green grass and technology for the entire world desires. They killed her parents, they killed Abraham’s family, and they killed millions of people so why were they allowed to live.

Her eyes shoot open she didn’t know how long she had slept for but the sky was lighter than usual. The rough burlap under her skin wasn’t the porcelain she was supposed to feel. Sitting up, she recognizes her surroundings as the bedroom Ramon was sleeping in.

“Calm down you was asleep in the tub you was out for quite a while”

Looking at him she just groans and scratches at the burlap. It was rough and coarse, but it had its soft parts that were worn and tattered.

“Where is your guest?” She asks and rubs her eyes.

“She had to go … we need to speak Isis. You’ve changed and it’s a concern that maybe this adventure should end” He whispered. Eerily turning her head, she slowly raised her shoulders and shrugged.

“That is fine with me, but that prize money is mine!” Tossing the small satchel with coins towards her and it tears at the seams. The gold rains onto the floor and clinks with sound when screams are heard.

“How could they?”
“My god those poor people”
“It’s another revolution!”

“What in the gods name?” Ramon says and opens the door when a tall man with dark onyx curls tied in a ponytail was comforting a young lady.

 “What is going on?”

“You did not hear! Talbot … it was attacked by Melcher, President Z says there is no need for seven cities”. Isis glances at Ramon, who takes a step forward before leaping out the door.

She went to chase after him before retreating back into the room and grabbing the money from the ground. Returning back to the two people in the hallway, she tosses the young man three coins.

“Thanks” Isis mumbles..
“You’re welcome Isis” He replies as the young lady walks away from the two in tears.

“How do you know of my name, no one knows of my name?” Lowering her eyes she took in his body and form. It wasn’t in fighting stance or even a threatening one..

Book Review: The Time Chamber by Daria Song

The Time Chamber

Rating: 5 /5 Stars

Once again it is time for us adults to tap into our inner child! This book is the sequel to author and artist Daria Song "The Time Garden". Coloring books for adults are currently a bigger seller in the market and in the app world. This book is about 80 pages long, with double sided coloring pages and even the cover can be splashed with the colors you love. I love this book because each page has more detail than the first one and we see it through a small fairy's eyes. As I said for the first one the images are quite beautiful and it is a calming activity especially for someone like I who deals with anxiety!

Hey Song! Is this going to be a trilogy.

These coloring books are now becoming ways to teens and adults to cope with anxiety or stress. I love this book but some of the images are very tiny my advice would be to get sharp coloring pencils or ink markers. The images are quite beautiful and it is a calming activity especially for someone like I who deals with anxiety!

Story Excerpt: Brotherhood

This is a story I am working on that I really fell in love with. It started out years ago about two siblings and then I recently expanded it five siblings. Brotherhood is about family, love and the struggle of being a unit when there are five very different spirits living in one home. Its inspired by a friend who had to start taking care of his siblings at a young age.

I introduce to you excerpts of an excerpt.

I introduce the Santiago siblings.

Prologue

Hearing the familiar beep of cops he threw away the cigarette and tried to run. He made it a few feet before he was slammed into the brick wall by a heavy set Caucasian male. Struggling against the wall the cop slammed him once again making him wince in pain. “Name?” Knowing his brothers were going to kill him, he decided to keep quiet as they searched him for other illegal items. He knew he didn’t have any so he let the search continue when he felt them grab his wallet. Sighing as they opened it and his name flew from their lips.

“Ezra Santiago”

***

She knew her brothers wouldn’t agree with their little sister dressed in a tight gold glitter dress in a club. She was the baby of the family, she was supposed to be the one with her head in the books, but instead she is the one who sneaks out. She winked at a few men in the front as they whistled loudly as a response. The future doctor was secretly in love with being a blue singer in a dim bar far out in Harlem. The last beats played out on the drums as she closed her hazel eyes to the crowd.  She stepped back as the host of the club took the microphone from her.

“Destiny Santiago”

***

“Yo, Yo, Yo what is going on tonight?” His voice boomed as everyone began to cheer him on. Smirking at the praise he was denied in his home, but received in abundance at parties. “You already know who it is its AGS also known as Aide the money man, this is for all the single ladies in the crowd tonight”. He scratched the new song into another and the women cheered when they heard Trey Songz began to sing. His coworker with bright yellow headphones turned to him

“You are one crazy dude Aiden Santiago”

***

Packing his briefcase with some of the folders of paper he heard the familiar whirring. The paper smoothly came out and a smile graced his face. “Hey Santiago go home already, I promised your brother I go easy” Turning to see a woman with a smile and a bottle of soda. “Ok thanks Lacey” He said and closed the suitcase. “Don’t worry Gabe it’ll get better, tell everyone I said Hi” She whispered as he grabbed his jacket off the chair.

Smiling at her he rushed out the office before someone shouted "Gabriel Santiago"

***

Being the eldest of his five made it a mundane routine of frustrations. Knowing that Ezra and Destiny were the youngest made it harder on him, especially since they had the huge age gap from him. By now he would have been pushed to the side, barely thanked and alone in the kitchen in about five minutes.  Seeing two post it’s on the fridge, he snatched it off reading Aiden’s chicken scratch that he had a last minute gig and that no one was allowed to sleep on his couch. The next one had more of a flow of it and it was Destiny’s. She had written that a last minute study group sprang up and not to wait up for her. Rummaging through the brown bag he reached in for his pork fried rice and general Tso chicken. Thanking the Lord for the empty silence for the few seconds he had and smells the aroma of the food. Reaching for his fork the house phone began to ring and he groaned.

 “Romeo Santiago speaking”
